Recommended Reading for Poker Enthusiasts
I often refer to books about poker strategy in my articles, and indeed in my never ending quest to improve my game, to be fair, I am a bit of a poker nerd, but that is good news for you because I have filtered through a lot of poor books and have distilled years worth of reading into this simple list.
My recommended poker books are:
Poker Strategy
- Harrington on Hold ‘Em Volume I: Strategic Play by Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie
- Harrington on Hold ‘Em Volume II: The Endgame by Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie
- Harrington on Hold ‘Em Volume III: The Workbook by Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie
- Super System 2 by Doyle Brunson
- Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen
- Championship No-limit and Pot Limit Hold'em by T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy
- The Theory of Poker: A Professional Poker Player Teaches You How to Think Like One by David Sklansky
- Caro's Book of Tells, the Body Language and Psychology of Poker by Mike Caro
- The Mathematics of Poker by Bill Chen (this is a tough read if you, like me are not a maths genius!)
I wouldn’t say that I really ever sit down and read a poker strategy book from cover to cover, I tried that with the original Super System book and it nearly put me off poker for life! I use poker strategy books for researching strategy, reviewing played hands and maybe how I could have played them better, testing theories or just boring my friends at our local home game, which I nearly always lose so a mate who is so drunk he can’t even recall whether a Full House beats a Flush.
Poker ‘Tales’
- Positively Fifth Street: Murderers, Cheetahs, and Binion's World Series of Poker by James McManus
- The Man Behind the Shades: The Rise and Fall of Stuey 'The Kid' Ungar, Poker's Greatest Player by Nolan Dalla
- Big Deal: One Year as a Professional Poker Player by Anthony Holden
I would and do quite happily sit down and read a poker tale from cover to cover, Positively Fifth Street is the best of the bunch I have read, by a long way.
Enjoy your reading
