When’s the best time to play poker?

Online poker is a 24-hour business – for which we should thank the Lord himself. But when you log on and cash out, very much affects the kind of poker game you’re going to get.
When’s the best time to play poker? Well, that depends on what kind of player you are – and when you can fit a bit of poker time into your crazy, hurried, work-cursed life.
You’d think that Saturday nights would be a hard time to make money playing poker: not a bit of it. If anything, I find it’s the weekdays when the real hard cases come out: disguised pros playing eight tournaments at once; casino croupiers killing time before the next shift; Russian “security professionals” shifting time before the next kill.
The small hours are tricky, too: that’s when insomniacs stalk the tables and, while you may stumble across a loose drunk practically giving away his chips, there’s a lot of people out there with brains working too fast for sleep.
Saturday nights are relatively easy pickings: that’s when the world and his wife log on to play, and to be honest the happy couple could do with a bit more game time to sharpen their skills a little.
Find a ring game, a Sit-N-Go, a multi-table tournament; anything – there’s players out there just waiting to hand over their money.
But if you only play Saturday nights you’re going to struggle when you come up against a pro who’s been caning it Monday to Friday. Fishing with the little fish isn’t much help when you’re shortstacked against someone called VladAK47 in a heads-up showdown.
So mix it up a bit. Play against the tight old guys who claim they can’t read the cards ‘cause their eyes are going; seek out the showboaters who never stop with the chat; play early, play late, play often.
You’ll find it makes you a better player – able to spot different styles and switch your game to meet the circumstances. You should also find out when is the best time to play poker for you, and that’s a rich reward in itself.
