£100k 'second chance' Poker Classic Tournament – Day 2 Report
Posted by Waldorf 1 on 12 Nov 2008 at 16:11
Our intrepid reporter, Waldorf1, spent the weekend getting close to the action at the £100k’ Second Chance’ Poker Classic tournament. Read below for his blow by blow account of Day 2.
12:36pm
A text message wakes me up, I am showered, shaved and out in a record 7 minutes 27 seconds. I am pleased with myself.
1pm
Play starts with 50 players left, surely some nice steady poker. The poker team have consulted the players and have agreed to increase the first level times to one hour and soften the Ante increase. This is what good poker is all about, making sure the game is of good quality and that if the players think could be improved, listening to them and acting accordingly. A massive ‘pat on the back’ for the poker team and Julie Eden.
1:09pm
49 players, with one of the low stacks being eliminated
1:20pm
We are down to 47 players when news comes of James Browning’s exit. James pushed in and stole a set of blinds and antes, following hand was dealt King 10 suited, pushed again and ran into Ace Queen suited...same suit as his King 10 and is eliminated.
1:30pm
The action is heavy, down to 43 players when Michelle Bricknell pushes all in against John Hopkins. She flips over Kings, John shows Ace Queen, Michelle collects a King on the turn to double up, John is fine as he has plenty of chips left.
1:40pm
And there is action on Table 2 with Mickey Wernick standing up and putting his coat on. Mickey has shoved All In with King Queen, the Mad Turk goes immediately All In and after some contemplation the other players in the hand fold. Mickey shows his King Queen and Youcel shows Ace King. The two folding players tell Mickey that they both had Queens. He’s out.
I have got a shocking headache, but Terri brings me two cheese and ham toasties and the biggest vat of water you have ever seen.
1:45pm
37 players, some massive action on Table 3 with Tom Cunningham and Jon Kalmar going at a 200k pot. John flips Aces and they hold up against Tom’s 9s. Tom is seriously short stacked and is eliminated the next hand. Ken is still sitting pretty with approximately 100k chips, let’s see how Cheryl is doing.
1:50pm
36 Players, Snoopy departs the scene, short stacked went in with 8 4 suited I think, I did see it, but only for about one nanosecond. Cheryl is doing Ok, hasn’t won a hand yet but is still on about 70k chips or so
1:55pm
It is absolute carnage here, 34 players left. We are paying 18 places.
2pm
Chatting to Phil Worrall, Cookyhater, about his experience yesterday, he qualified online in one of our bounty tournaments, was sat with twice the stack but felt he needed another double up, so pushed in with a medium value hand and missed his straight, with hindsight, he should have sat back and waited. However he is pleased overall, as he then played some cash games and turned £50 into £850 cash. Seems like the cash games in Circus Casino Star City are pretty profitable with Adam Ralph and Phil Worrall taking a combined £1400 from a stake of £100. What am I doing sat behind this computer screen?
2:15pm
31 players left and Skallie (Jon Kalmar) has eliminated another player with his massive stack. Stuart Rutter appears to be wearing some sort of tea cosy on his head, must be a bad hair day.
2:20pm
29 players, they are falling thick and fast. John Hopkins is the latest player to leave the tables as the dealers do their chip races to get rid of the low value chips. Not sure what these players were doing last night, but about half of them are running to the toilets! We estimate at this stage that the whole thing will be over by 6pm at this rate. Better get my travel plans changed!
2:30pm
Two members of the Newcastle Poker Forum are in a big pot against each other, one player announcing he has queens so the other calls him...with 87 off suit! He inevitably hits his straight on the flop and takes around 40k chips from his mate.
2:40pm
Controversy on Table 1 as another player is eliminated, there is a debate amongst the players about whether a player declared fold or not, but it looks like it’s been settled properly. I never know what the situation is with the verbal Vs action debate, I’ve played in some card rooms where they say actions speak louder than words, but in most the ‘verbal wins’ rule is the norm, and it certainly should be. When coaching Adam for his first live tournament, one of the things I hammered home to him was to state clearly what his intentions were before he touched his chips, no fancy chucking chips in trying to look cool. It is a recipe for disaster and I’ve seen lots of problems over the years with players wanting to raise but throwing in single chips, or even string betting because they didn’t state what they intended to do.
2:45pm
28 players
Vic Rooney is out. Vic works for iPoker the poker room which supplies Circuspoker.co.uk which is now probably the second or third biggest poker room in the world, even on a Wednesday afternoon there are usually well over 10,000 active players playing, so there is never a shortage of games available.
3pm
27 players. Average stack is 80400. Time for a Ken update. He’s doing well, looks to have approximately 100k chips in front of him, but Cheryl is flying with about 120k, looks like I have eventually found a couple of good prospects to focus on.
3:05pm
26 players, Ken is out. No he isn’t only kidding. Not sure who has gone out as I was taking some Asprin for my massive headache and missed the action. I am never ever drinking again. Ever. Seriously. It’s now break time, 45 minutes for the players to get fed and watered.
4pm
Back after break, everyone looking refreshed, and I feel like the woodpecker has been joined by his mates and their families. The poker team have consulted the players and have agreed to cap the blinds and antes at their current 2000 / 4000 with 500 Ante level until there are 18 players. This a great move by the team to ensure the game doesn’t end up in some sort of craps shoot.
4:07pm
23 players left. With Stephen one of the Newcastle poker forum players being eliminated, he’s enjoyed himself.
4:20pm
22 players left, looks like the longer levels and the capping tactic are not really having an impact as this lot are ‘shove’ mad, pushing piles of chips in almost every hand. Its good fun, I wish my headache would go away. Julie has gone away to sort out the Perspex case of money, should look good next to our invisible trophies. Prego* the design agency for Circuspoker.co.uk, came up with some very stylish glass etched trophies, the only problem is on the photos we have taken so far, you can’t really see them! Lesson learned, next time get metallic cup style trophies!
4:40pm
20 players, 2 tables left. 108,500 average chip stack. The Mad Turk is not happy. He’s big blind, folds round to Ken who has Cheryl and another player sat between him and Turk, Ken’s making his decision when Cheryl and the other player walk away from the table. They have informed Ken with their actions that they are going to fold, this tells Ken he’s only up against Turk, who by this point is short stacked, bad etiquette really, but neither player realised their mistake. This is a typical error often made by internet players, who are used to checking the ‘Fold’ box and going off to make themselves a brew, they get used to the system ensuring they don’t act out of turn but when in the live arena there is no system.
Live poker is often a very different game to internet poker, and nothing beats the experience.
Stuart “Tea Cosy” Rutter is getting grief from Sally Smerdon for the fact that his trousers are hanging so low on his hips he is showing that vast majority of his backside to the poker room. Come on Stu, get a belt mate.
4:45pm
Red Dog is out 20th. Amazingly he goes from 150k chips ish to 20th place in about 20 minutes, not sure what happened there, but I am sure he’ll write about it on Blondepoker.
4:55pm
Its hand for hand and all the action appears to be on the Mad Turks table – mind you that is hardly surprising really considering his reputation. The long time chip leader is now the short stack of the tournament and is looking favourite to finish in 19th place, the last place outside the money.
5:10pm
Turk pushed All In for 17000, Stuart Rutter calls him blind. Turk turns over 9 8, Stu’s got 9 3. The flop comes 8 Ace Ace, Turk is ahead, turn and river are both rags and the Turk has doubled up. Hardly made a dent in Stuart’s stack though. Meanwhile on Table 1 Jon Kalmar is regaling the table with tales of his WSOP 2007 final table finish. To be fair, he did win $1.25million.
5:15pm
The action is back on Table 2 with Jeff Bolding’s All In being called by Adrian Lambe, Jeff’s got Aces, Adrian had got Ace King, the flop come out with absolute rubbish and Jeff doubles up. He’s now got 40k chips, the most he’s had all tournament. Jeff is an internet qualifier who plays at Circus Casino, Star City (as does Adrian) Jeff’s been playing poker for about a year and has won a couple of local tournaments, this is his first major tournament and the consensus is that he has played exceptionally well grinding up his stack.
5:25pm
Here we go by the looks of it. Jeff Bolding is All In again against David Yang who is wearing a Titleist golf bobble hat, which makes him look like a garden gnome, I’ll try and find out what the story of the hat is later. Jeff has Kings, two of them, David has got Tens. Two nice hands to go All in with for Jeff there. Anyway here is the flop and would you believe it, there’s a ten in it. The king never comes and David wins the hand.
Jeff finishes on the bubble, but it’s not all bad news. As short stacks on the table a few hours ago, he and Youcel have done a deal whereby if either of them bubbled they paid the other £500, so the Turk hands over the readies and Jeff has made a tidy profit, he qualified for free on CircusPoker.co.uk so it’s not a bad result is it?
6pm
They are back. 18 players. They are in the money with 18th place getting a shade over £1k in prize money.
6:15pm
16 players left.
18th Place: Nikki Short £1085
17th Place: Mike Bowler £1085
6:40pm
Still 16 players, play seems to have considerably tightened up now, players are in the money and are holding onto chips to try and maximise their earnings. A quick look around the table shows that Jon Kalmar is probably chip leader, but Adrian Lambe is seriously stacked also.
6:50pm
I am shattered.
7:15pm
13 players, it all happened at once so I struggled to get it all recorded, but here’s what I know.
16th Place: Youcel “Mad Turk” Emingolu £1085
15th John Scott £1628
14th Paul Bell £1628
I have no idea what happened to the Mad Turk but I am sure I’ll find out.
John Scott was unlucky when his pocket 3s ran into pocket 4s and he was on his way, Paul Bell lost to pocket 7s when his 10 9 suited missed any cards that gave him a hope on the flop.
7:30pm
12 players.
13th Place David Collins £2170
David runs the Newcastle Poker Forum with his son Scott. Again not sure what he went out with I think he went out against Jon Kalmar, I’ll try and find out, he promised me an interview but seems to have left the building....
7:40pm
15 minute break. Nothing happens, I present a couple of bottles of champagne to Dealer of the Tournament (Calverton) and Supervisor of the Tournament (Bonnie), I smile, my head still hurts and the flash makes my eyes hurt.
7:55pm
11 Players.
12th Place Aslam Zahir £2170.
After an eight month absence from the UK, Aslam in only his second tournament back played very impressive poker throughout. He only got in at the last minute as the final alternate, and made a tidy profit but lost out when his Ace Queen was beaten by Adrian Lambe’s Ace King with a King first card on the flop. Nice effort, time to go home. Only 1 player left before we get to the final table.
8:05pm
Action on table 2 when Stuart Rutter calls Sally “TherealSAS” Smerdon’s All In push. Sally’s got Ace King, Stuart has got pocket 8s. The flop comes Ace rag 8 giving Stuart trip 8s. The Turn and River are rags so Stuart doubles up and then some.
8:30pm
They have decided to go hand for hand until there are 10 players left, creating a final table of 10 rather than the usual nine. Again a great compromise by the card room team listening to the players
8:35pm
Suddenly everyone rushes over to table 1, we have an All In bet, but everyone folds. This annoys me as I smashed my knee cap into a table in my haste to report the action, I think it might be broken, hanging off even, but it’s not. Again they are rushing round Table 1, again nothing happens. I have now moved my laptop to a nearer location.
8:45pm
Table 2 sees Cheryl put Stuart Rutter All In with her Ace Queen, but she’s run into Ace King and a 10 6 2 7 Jack flops sees Stuart building back up with a tidy stack. He’s built back up to almost 200k chips from a short stack of 40k, nice play from the man with the world’s biggest woolly hat on.
9:05pm
Cheryl’s pushing again on an Ace Jack 10 flop, Adrian is thinking about it for ages and folds, a wise move because as far as I am concerned Cheryl is never going to shove in that situation unless she is holding a very good hand.
9:10pm
Ken’s at it now, All In move with a 5 3 3 flop. Again it’s Adrian’s call, and again he folds.
9:11pm
Now Sally Smerdon is making a move, pushed All In pre flop and the table folds round to Stuart Rutter who toys with his chips for a while and folds
9:25pm
Nicky “Its not a girls name honest” Evans on Table 1 is All In against James Egarr, Nicky’s got Ace King and James has Ace Queen, shame for James when the flop doesn’t help either of them and Nicky’s King wins him a tidy pot. Will we EVER get down to 10 players?
9:30pm
10 Players
11th Place Paul Sahl £2170
Action on Table 1 with Paul Sahl going All In against Nicky Evans, Pauls got pocket Kings and Nicky shows pocket Jacks. Flop comes 10 6 5 with a Jack on the turn and Paul is left with a single 500 chip. He’s Ante All In next hand and catches Pocket 6s to win the 3000 Ante pot and lives to fight yet another day, which happens to be the very next hand. Paul with his 3000 stack shoves in with 10 5 and David Yang calls turning Ace 8, Paul catches the 5 on the flop, but David hits his 8 and Paul goes home in a very creditable 11th place.
Final Table Chip Count
| Name | Chip Count |
| Hieu Tran | 470800 |
| Jon Kalmar | 314600 |
| Ken Clark | 301000 |
| Adrian Lambe | 298200 |
| David Yang | 234200 |
| Nicky Evans | 206400 |
| Stuart Rutter | 182000 |
| Sally Smerdon | 122300 |
| Cheryl Wood | 45900 |
| James Egarr | 14100 |
10:15pm
10th Place James Eggar £2712
James gets Ace 7 Vs Sally Smerdon’s 5 2, James went All In and Sally with a much bigger stack had to call the flop gives Sally a 2 and James nothing and he’s out.
James is a local to Star City, qualified for the event via an online freeroll at CircusPoker.co.uk which he plays at quite regularly along with Full Tilt. He’s had a rollercoaster of a tournament, getting down to 600 chips at the end of level one and fighting his way back. James was delighted with his performance and told me he thought the decision to cap the blinds by the Circus Casino team was a great decision, to be fair, it probably saved his skin! Well done James.
10:20pm
9th Place Cheryl Wood £3255
David Yang is All In with King King Vs Cheryl’s Ace King, John has already announced that he folded a pair of tens as the flop comes 3 4 8 5 5
Again, like James, Cheryl is an online qualifier having found out about the £100k Poker Classis whilst playing at Circus Casino in Stoke. Cheryl is a regular on the BetFred Ladies tour. A Manchester girl who bizarrely supports St Helens RL, Cheryl is off to Vegas soon for a honeymoon to Keith (lucky fella) following her recent marriage in Cyprus. England, Cheryl, what’s wrong with it? She’s been playing poker for 6 years, 4 years online and the £100k Poker Classic is the biggest tournie she’s played in and...she has loved every minute of it.
10:30pm
David’s Gnome Hat. No story there, it’s just a golf hat that he wanted to wear in a daft way. And he’s only 19 years old!
I am sweating Chardonnay I believe. I feel like the woodpecker family have moved into my stomach.
10:35pm
8th Place Stuart Rutter £4340
Stuart and Adrian have been trading chips all day, and when Stuart gets Kings, and is put All in by Adrian with a Jack 10 4 flop, Stuart knows Adrian has pocket 4s, but he cannot get away from the Kings and calls. Adrian shows the 4s and the turn and river are rags. Stuart is out. So far this year Tea Cosy man has got to 3 final tables and each time he has finished 8th. A pattern emerges there. In fact a potential sponsor emerges there also!
Talking to Stuart it is apparent that he is gutted by his move. He stands in the card room for a good 20 minutes thinking about his move. Stuart Rutter is a far better player than I am, but I can’t help but agree with him, he should have laid his Kings down and carried on with the game, he would have still been in good shape.
10:45pm
7th Place Sally Smerdon £4340
Sally gets pocket 6s and runs into a bullish Nicky “It is actually a girl’s name mate” Evans with his Ace Queen. The flop comes King 7 5 Queen 9 and Sally stands up and leaves the table. “I loved it” was her first response and her second was “Will you sponsor me”- nice try. This is Sally’s first final table in a major UK event after 20 years of playing, she’s an editor on AWorldofPoker.com. Sally has a great story behind her motivation to do well in this event. She has been looking after her ill mother and needs to find a well paying job to help with costs, she has decided to become a driving instructor but hasn’t got the £3k needed for the course...well she has now hasn’t she? Brilliant stuff, well done Sally!
10:48pm
Stuart Rutter is still deep in thought in the poker room. I think he is taking root.
11:10pm
Talk about action, we’ve just seen the hand of the tournament. And it went like this.
Hieu Tran and David Yang are going Raise Re-Raise mad and we see a flop of 2c 9c 6 Jack c when Hieu, with approximately 200k in the pot, moves All In. David turns into “The Thinker” and spends at least 15 minutes debating his move before folding, with some reluctance. Hieu Tran shows his King 10 of diamonds, he has bluffed David out of a monster pot, and David is not happy with himself, with head in hands is David going to go on tilt?
Now that was awesome poker, it was a great hand by Hieu, almost Phil Hellmuth Vs Mike Matusow like, nice play. However, personally? I wouldn’t have shown the cards. It could give other players a read or the feeling that maybe Mr Big Stack is callable.
11:20pm
After two days of frankly superb poker Ken Clark plays a shocker. He’s in a hand against Nicky Evans and Ken is convinced Nicky is bluffing, he’s holding Ace 10 so he calls Nicky’s All In bet. This is a 600k pot, and Ken has only 50k left in front of him...when Nicky shows.....Queens. Flop comes Jack 6 7 2 4 and Ken is limping like an arthritic giraffe, with 3 legs, walking on cobbles.
This hand was set up by Nicky a few hands earlier when he tried to bluff with 3 2, folded when pressurised, but showed the table his hand. Obviously this was on Ken’s mind when he called the bet.
11:45pm
6th Place David Yang £4882
David is knocked out by Skallie when his Queen Queen smashes head first into John’s Ace Ace. The flop even kicks David in the proverbials by delivering an Ace on the river. So how did the young poker player end up here?
David qualified at Mint Casino in Southend and has only been playing poker for 9 months, and here he is being congratulated on his play by the likes of Stuart Rutter and Jon Kalmar, good man! Reviewing the monster hand against Hieu he reveals he was on a semi bluff himself with 5 6, so he’d only got a pair of 6s. It would have won him the hand, but it was hardly the monster most of us thought he’d laid down! Great play by David though overall, he’s played superb poker.
David has won about $5000 playing online so far and by the looks of it, could go on to very big things in the poker world, you heard about him here first.
Midnight
Ken moves All In with King Jack against Hieu Tran’s Jack Queen, the flop delivers nothing for either player and Ken is up to 92k, can he fight back?
12:12am
No
5th Place Ken Clark £5968
Ken is All in with Ace 7 against against Hieu with 9s, flop is 5 10 Jack Jack Queen and Ken is on his way back to Manchester.
We’ve already done the Ken story, but he has enjoyed himself and can’t wait to get back to Manchester, in fact he is driving home straight away!
Ken played very solid poker all through the festival, finishing on the final table at the £100 Pot Limit Omaha event on Friday, however his one mistake against Nicky Evans cost him very dear and ultimately ended his tournament. Nice fella though.
12:30am
4th Place Hieu Tran £8137
Hieu moves All In following a 5c Jack 10c 6c King c flop and Adrian thinks long and hard about his call, cutting chips, looking at the prize board several times, before flipping Tens. Hieu turns over King Queen and is knocked out by 10s, ultimately he’s semi bluffing, representing the flush, Adrian perhaps remembering the earlier reveal by Hieu called him. Great call Adrian.
Hieu is a local to Circus Casino at Star City and bought in directly here, £8k is his second biggest payout and his comments about the event was “it was alright” and that was that, with a shrug of his shoulders he walks off to have his photo taken with Gary Kane, Poker Manager for Circuspoker.co.uk.
Break.
1am – The top 3
| Name | Chip Count |
| Adrian Lambe | 950,000 |
| Nicky Evans | 660,000 |
| Jon Kalmar | 560,000 |
After some debate, bluff and bravado between the players, a deal is done whereby Adrian gets £23.5k, Nicky gets £17k and John £16.5k and they play winner takes all for the other £4844
1:15am
Nicky Evans and Adrian Lambe are immediately into a big pot, with the flop showing all manner of possibilities including Full House, Flush, Straight and Straight Flush. Nicky puts in a massive bet and Adrian again, takes his time to think about it, and calls, flipping 9s. Nicky shows King high, a total bluff and Adrian takes a massive proportion of Nicky’s chips. Very brave move by Nicky, but a stunning call by Adrian.
1:20am
The flop shows Queen h 7 h and King d and Skallie pushes his 387k
All In. They start talking:
Adrian: “What have you got?”
Jon: “If I told you, would you believe me?”
Adrian: “No”
Jon: “Then you can’t really pass it then can you?”
Adrian thinks about that response and folds. Clever verbals from Jon as he takes the blinds and Antes, probably the difference between a professional poker player and an amateur played out in full there.
1:40am
Jon and Nicky (the short stack by now) are fighting out a raise battle until there is 200k in the pot pre flop, the flop comes as 2 Ace 8, some more raising to the turn which is another Ace. Nicky moves All In and Jon calls. He turns over Ace 5 and Nicky turns Ace Queen. The river is a 9 and Nicky collects 700k chips, Jon is in trouble.
1:55am
Nicky Evans eats probably his 40th Cheese toastie of the day.
2am
Nicky raises a huge 200k on the Big Blind, Adrian calls, Jon folds. The flop is Jack King Queen, Nicky checks, Adrian bets 100k and Nicky calls. The turn is a Queen and again Nicky checks, Adrian bets 150k and Nicky starts talking.
“I’m trying to think of a hand that can beat me” he says to Adrian who sits impassively staring at his massive chip stack.
“Why did you check the flop unless you have Ace 10?” Nicky continues to chip away at Adrian.
He finally offers this gem “This is going to be one of those hands where you either look really good or really stupid”
He calls the bet. The turn comes 6 and both players check.
Nicky shows his Ace Jack and Adrian turns....Ace 10, he did indeed flop his straight on the flop. The answer is “really stupid” Nicky....
2:20am
The flop shows Ace Queen 8 Jack 8 and Skallie quickly moves All In. Adrian Lambe, who I have failed to mention so far has the online poker nickname of StarCityPlonker, starts talking again, this time to himself:
“Whenever he moves quickly he has the goods”
Adrian then folds, and Jon shows 9 7 – he has nothing and Adrian’s read is proved wrong.
Nice play by Skallie.
3am
3rd Place Jon “Skallie” Kalmar £16500 (deal)
Jon’s pair of 5s ran into Adrian’s pair of 6s and Jon is eliminated after the flop doesn’t help him.
Jon is going to put his winnings towards a new bathroom (or was it kitchen) as he is having his house done up. When asked b y me if he was tired, he said “Not really I am usually up until 5am anyway”, how do these people do it? I have two late nights on the trot and I am shivering and feeling like my head is going to fall off, mind you the wine probably didn’t help.
Jon collects his invisible trophy and is presented with his cheque by Julie Eden, Assistant General Manager at Circus Casino Star City.
Jon played some great poker, and kept many of his opponents guessing as to what he was about to do, whilst also keeping them amused with stories from his poker experiences around the world.
3:01am
It is over!
With over 90% of the chips sat in front of Adrian, he and Nicky agree a deal, with Adrian taking the £4k and Nicky the £844.
2nd Place
Nicky Evans £17844 (double deal)
Nicky bought in directly in Brighton and plays a lot of poker “everyday mate” was his answer when asked how often. He plays a lot online and this was his biggest win so far. He is 21 years old and judging by some of his play is another one to watch out for, he needs a nickname. Some of his mates bought shares in him so some of the £17844 would be given to them, but he’d have enough left to buy the new Pro Evo Soccer game, so he’s happy.
Some excellent play from Nicky throughout the tournament indicates that we’ll see this young man again.
Nicky had his cheque and trophy presented by Dave Bryan, Marketing Manager for Genting Alderney, Dave is wearing a shirt that appears to be made out of a couple of tea towels, a nice contrast to Nicky’s ubiquitous Red Hoodie.
Nicky definitely got a worse presenter that Jon!
1st Place Adrian Lambe £27500 (double deal)
Adrian has been playing poker for about 3 years and this is the first major tournament he has won (and only the second he has entered). He qualified online with Circuspoker.co.uk and says that being a bridge player really helped him to get a read on people and to evaluate situations.
He was on an adrenaline high when I spoke to him and could hardly keep still. He was looking forward to his 100 mile drive home, and finished our chat saying “having a lucky wife helps!”
Adrian had his cheque and winner’s trophy presented to him by Nicky Clements, General Manager at Circus Casino, Star City. Again he got a much better photo than Nicky.
So it is over. Done. Dusted.
Nicky Clements and her team were awesome, and ran a superb poker tournament. The event was a success and the feedback from the players was very positive. I am shutting my laptop now, because if I don’t I fear I will fall asleep at it. Until next time....
