Poker Nicknames

Posted by Lee Garrett on 10 Dec 2008 at 14:12

Let’s face it, poker wouldn’t be poker without the nicknames; we’ve got the Devilfish (David Ulliott), The Dice Man (Willie Tann), Fossilman (Greg Raymer), The Matador (Carlos Mortensen) and even Jesus (Chris Ferguson). And this got us thinking, do you earn your poker nickname, or do you make up your own? We reckon that you should earn it at the table, rather than choosing your own, otherwise we’d all choose names that sound really cool and dangerous, like “The Bullets” or “The Royal Flush”.

However, the exception is playing online when you get to choose your own nickname. But weirdly, online players never seem to choose very interesting names and there seems to be a real lack of imagination. A quick straw poll of some of the players on CircusPoker.co.uk right now throws up ‘hldnf’, ‘Ixtress’ and ‘Clain’ – hardly the kind of names that strike fear into other players.

So what do you think? Is an online nickname important to let other players know you’re serious or doesn’t it matter? And have you got a great poker nickname? Come on, we won’t laugh!
