Number 1: Richard Strauss – 1982 WSOP – “A Chip and a Chair”
Probably one of the most famous poker phrases originates from one of the most amazing sporting comebacks of all time. It’s definitely our Number one. It’s the 1982 WSOP and Richard Strauss has just been asked how many chips he has left, he counts them and the bet is made. He calls the bet and is beaten. As he turns to leave the table, the dealer notices he has a $500 poker chip under his napkin. He never said All In, so on a technicality he sits down with his solitary chip and resumes play.
He immediately moved All In and doubled up, again and again. Two days after he thought he had originally been eliminated, his A-10 stands up against Dewy Tonko’s A-4 and Richard Strauss is the WSOP Champion.
