Friday fun: The $40 Million Face - Revealed

Posted by Mike Wooten on 26 Sep 2008 at 08:09

As you might have heard, the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) kicked off last Friday (19th September) in London.

This got the CircusPoker.co.uk team thinking; what would the perfect poker face look like? Being the inquisitive people we are, we got in touch with Naomi Tickle, a leading international personologist (that means a face reader to me and you), and asked her to analyse the faces of the last 10 winners of the WSOP main event in Las Vegas.

Collectively these guys have won more than $40m in prizes from the World Series alone, so we reckon they’re among the best poker players in the world.

The results were surprising, and the facial features of the winners showed many similarities – they include a Roman nose, jutting chin, cupped-out ears and wide-set eyes.

Naomi even reckons that there is a ‘poker look’ and many of the facial traits are ones you would normally see in actors and successful business people - it seems a good poker player mixes commercial nous with theatrical flair!

To see what this perfect poker face looks like, we got some IT wizardry to create a composite image.

The specific attributes are:

  1. Roman nose of Chris Moneymaker
  2. Wide-set eyes of Jerry Yang
  3. Head width of Greg Raymer & Noel Furlong
  4. Sloped-back forehead of Robert Varkonyi
  5. High forehead of Carlos Montensen
  6. Jutting chin of Scotty Nguyen
  7. Outer corner of the eye of Joseph Hachem
  8. Cupped out ears of Chris Ferguson
  9. Flared outer edge of the eyebrow of Jamie Gold

Tell us what you think! Would you be able to read this face or do you know anyone who looks like it? The best response wins a CircusPoker.co.uk USB poker chip memory stick!

Where are the features of Doyle Brunson? Johnny Chan? Stu Unger? You've got to have those 3 in the face surely? and whooa just noticed that Phil Hellmuth is also missing. What utter rubbish, Brunson / Chan / Hellmuth, between them have won more WSOP events and bracelets that those lot put together. What about Dan Harrington. Basically that list is rubbish. If I had photoshop I'd knock up a face that woud batter that Joe Johnson lookalike into the ground, yes I would.

Dickie, yes I know I can read, my point was that it would be more valid, if they had chosen the 'best' poker players, not just those who have won it in the last 10 years. Jamie Gold is still top of the all time tournament money winners list just because he won the biggest WSOP event in history, yethe has basically won nothing else. If I was picking a player to back in an event, it would not be Gold (mind you would anyone after his antics a couple of years ago???) It would be Phil Hellmuth, Dan Harrington or Jonny Chan.

...but how do you define 'best', Gary? Your idea and my idea of 'best' may not be the same. So who would be right? At least with the last ten winners of the WSOP, there's no denying the fact.
