A model who has studied at university level to complete a degree in Astrophysics has managed to win a major prize in poker.

Liv Boeree won a £1,000,000 prize in a European poker tournament, which saw her beat 1,000 other players to take first place.

The event took place in San Remo in Italy, and was the climax of the renowned European Poker Tour series, which holds tournaments across Europe during its run.

The model, who has only been playing poker for four years, took first place by beating the famous 22 year old professional player from Sweden, Jakob Carlsson, holding a winning hand of a pair of fives compared to his hand of an ace high and a six.

As is customary with these major events, there was an extra bonus too, with Boeree securing a place at the European Poker Tour Grand Final, which takes place in a prestigious event in Monte Carlo.

If she matches her levels of success in that particular tournament with those enjoyed in San Remo, she could make a further £2 million in winnings.

Talking about her win to Newslite.tv Boeree said: ‘Winning a major event is exactly what I’ve been working towards.’

Poker is enjoying a boost in popularity, possibly due to the high number of online poker sites that have sprung up in recent times.
