'Pace of change' prompted review of rules for overseas gaming firms

The pace of technological change and a 'desire for a fair deal' is behind moves to review the rules governing internet gaming operators, ministers have said.

The UK government has announced a review of the rules governing overseas gambling firms who advertise in Britain, which could lead to greater contributions and tighter controls.

Minister for sport Gerry Sutcliffe outline the review of the rules, run by the UK Department for Culture Media and Sport in conjunction with the gambling commission.

Quoted by LawAndTax-News.com, he said: "Technology has evolved at an incredible pace and online gambling has changed significantly since the Gambling Act was passed. Now is the right time to take stock of developments in Europe and elsewhere to make sure our regulatory system is as fair and robust as possible for all operators able to advertise their services in the UK.

"It is early days so I do not want to pre-empt the outcome of this work - but getting a fairer deal for UK operators and ensuring continued consumer protection are my top priorities."

The department is to consult with a wide range of experts, including representatives from the remote gaming industry, before putting together a report due before Parliament before the end of this year.

Mr Sutcliffe has said the main aim is to ensure a level playing field between UK firms and overseas based companies.

The report could see overseas-based firms contributing more towards the treatment of problem gaming, the Horserace Betting Levy, and the cost of regulation.

The review will also check that consumer protection controls brought in by the Gambling Act are still being upheld.
