In Boston, Massachusetts, House Speaker Robert DeLeo has shocked and puzzled many of his colleagues and peers with his plans for gambling in the area
His proposal states that he would recommend two resort casinos as well as a number of slot machines to be installed at the state's race tracks, of which there are four.
Some lawmakers spoke on the subject shortly after DeLeo made his announcement.
State Rep Danielle Gregoire, speaking to DailyNewsTribune.com, said: ‘It's an economic issue for me, and I'm not sure that the money and the jobs that have been promised are actually there.'
DeLeo spoke on the issue to Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, which is a meeting of business leaders in the area.
Speaking to Boston's key business figures, he said: ‘I have cautioned before and I will caution again: Gaming is not a panacea. But it is a plan that creates a new economic sector and new jobs in Massachusetts when we need those most.'
Massachusetts is not the only state that is discussing the issue of gambling at this moment. The topic of online casinos is currently very contentious, with most US states considering the issue of regulating online gambling.
