The UK government has put a hold on new applications for offshore online firms to start advertising in Britain while it finishes its review of the Gambling Act.
Recent Poker reports it is believed the hold was instigated because of complaints from UK licensed gaming firms that their offshore competitors enjoy tax and other advantages.
Onshore companies have long argued that gambling in the UK is not a level playing field, and that offshore firms should be subject to more stringent rules.
The ongoing review is set to examine policies used by other European countries when it comes to gaming, and will also cast an eye over UK betting and VAT taxation of offshore firms.
The study is set to be finished by the end of this year and is being led by the Department of Culture Media and Sport.
