New York casino shelved

Posted by Carl Barnett on 28 Jan 2010 at 15:01

A new casino that was to be built near New York has been shelved.

The casino was to be built at Monticello Gaming and Raceway.

The casino, a project brought into being by a Native American tribe, has been closed due to 'concerns' raised by the tribe.

The tribe, the St Regis Mohawk Tribe, had been wary of a George Bush law that came into effect in recent years.

The rule made it illegal for any tribe to build a casino that is located too far away from their main reservation.

This effectively meant that The St Regis Mohawk Tribe were about to break the law.

This could have had major ramifications for the tribe and the people in it, hence the climb-down.

Sullivan County Partnership President, Mr Timothy McCausland, had this to say: "I hope that the folks at the track can identify another partner that can come forward and be part of the tremendous support that the county, the town of Thompson, and us here at the partnership have for casino gaming."
