Australian casino responds to allegations

An Australian casino accused of acting outside the limits of the law has hit back by stating that it is 'not a convent'.

A police report has come to light from 2007, and in the document it is stated that Melbourne's Crown Casino has experienced criminal activity, ranging from prostitution to money laundering.

The criminal activity took pace over a three year period.

A spokesman for the casino, Gary O'Neil, has responded to the surfacing of the report by claiming that his casino is heavily regulated.

Speaking to ABC News (Australia), Mr O'Neil said: "There is more legislation, regulation, rules to be followed and adhered to, than any other business. And we do.

"We are put to the test, and the test is the VCGR have to determine whether we are a sufficiently well-regulated operation to deserve to continue to hold the license, and they did that.

"But we are a casino. We are not the Star of the Sea convent. Things do go on, but we meet our obligations and our responsibilities in those areas." He also pointed out that the accusations are two years old, and that the casino has worked to deal with the issues since then.

Both offline and online gambling have come under fire recently, and there have been calls to regulate the industry with more rigour.
