Poland bans online gambling

Posted by Carl Barnett on 03 Dec 2009 at 14:12

Poland has become the latest country to ban online gambling.
Following the lead of countries like the United States and Russia, Poland has placed limits on the online gambling industry.
Land gambling has also suffered during this latest round of lawmaking.
Certain forms of gambling in casinos, like slot machines, have been declared illegal.
This has already had a negative effect on the income statements of many Polish casinos.
While many land casinos will offer some form of gambling, the Polish authorities are bringing prohibitive measures against much of what happens in casinos.
A recent scandal at the very top levels of government has captured the attention of the Polish nation, and many media commentators feel that this ban is a ploy to divert attention away from the scandal.
The United States is shortly expected to pass a law that limits online gambling.
The European Union has very recently brought motions to the World Trade Organisation regarding the United States' plans as regards online gambling.
It remains to be seen how the European Union deals with the issue on a Union-wide basis.
