America's new diplomatic era 'could help internet gaming'

A new period of dialogue between the US and the United Nations could be further proof that America is heading towards legalised internet gambling, according to some industry representatives.

Casino Gambling Web reports the Obama administration's moves to develop a closer working relationship with the UN have begun, with Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the organisation, making it clear her country is ready to work with officials.

The move is a turnaround compared to the tough front of the Bush administration, which took a more abrupt approach to the United Nations.

The US is in trouble with the European Commission over its anti-online gambling laws, with the organisation ruling America is in violation of EU trade laws.

The commission has given America a period of time to alter legislation or risk further action from the World Trade Organisation.

Since then both America and the European Commission have had discussions in an attempt to resolve the problem.

Rather than the approach regularly taken by George Bush, Obama has been more inclined to listen to concerns from external regulatory bodies.

According to Casino Gambling Web, Obama is looking to eventually oversee an overhaul of online gambling laws, with politicians Barney Frank and Roberto Menendez both working on their own proposals which would overhaul laws which outlawed online gambling in America.

The Menendez proposal is focused on making online poker legal, a hot subject since American officials froze bank accounts which were being used to pay winnings to online poker players in America.

The new approach to the UN is seen as further proof of a more relaxed stance which could lead to compliance with the European Commission's demands.
