The island of Jersey in the Channel Isles is said to be looking at becoming a gaming licensing haven for internet-based firms.
However, the BBC reported last week that the cost for interested parties could end up being greater than they first thought.
The price for a land betting shop licence on the island may even increase four-fold, according to the corporation.
The minister for economic development, Allan McLean, is mooting the increase in the fee, which has been the same since 2001.
Currently the yearly fee is £1,290 but this could go up to £5,000 from 2010.
Rules say amusement, entertainment and betting facilities on Jersey have to have a licence, and 29 venues will be affected by the rise.
Also possibly affected would be bingo events and lotteries, which may also face permit price increases.
